Module 2

Objective of the Module

The main aim of this module is to provide participants with essential knowledge and strategies for assessing the addition of illicit substances.

Assessment is a crucial moment not only to get a comprehensive view of the problem but also to identify the best intervention to adopt in the treatment of substance addiction. Throughout the module, participants will learn different strategies, tools, and best practices in the assessment of people with substance addiction.

By learning the assessment strategies and techniques covered in this module, participants will be able to improve their ability to assess people with substance use disorders with accuracy, ethics, and cultural sensitivity, ultimately contributing to better treatment and recovery outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the module, you should be able to

  1. Recognize the importance of assessment in the identification and treatment of substance use disorders.
  2. Describe the assessment process and its objectives in the context of illicit substance addiction.
  3. Understand the role of evaluation in intervention planning and monitoring
  4. Identify different methods and tools for assessing substance use disorders.
  5. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of different evaluation approaches.
  6. Recognize the influence of biological, psychological, and social factors on addiction.
  7. Understand the impact of concurrent non-psychiatric disorders and dual diagnoses on assessment and treatment.
  8. Plan the evaluation taking into account the characteristics of vulnerable populations such as adolescents, pregnant women and LGBTIQ+ people.
  9. Use strategies to combat stigma and discrimination in the evaluation process.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to structure evaluation interviews to gather relevant information. 
  11. Apply techniques to assess motivation and readiness for treatment.
  12. Analyze real situations and apply assessment tools and strategies.
  13. Demonstrate communication skills, empathy and building a therapeutic relationship.
  14. Understand the importance of collaborative work in dealing with additions.
  15. Integrate the assessment results into individualized treatment plans, considering the level of care, treatment objectives and available resources.
